Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most permanent and highest performing restorative options used in dentistry today. Rather than taking dentures in and out, having implants allows you to recreate your natural smile without any of the hassle, as implants mimic the look, feel, and function of real teeth.

Implants are either fitted in a two-stage or single-stage procedure. Depending on your jaw health, you made have endosteal/endosseous implants or subperiosteal implants.

Two-Stage

The first stage of this implant involves fitting the implant into the jaw bone. After the implant has been placed, we give time for the patient to heal and for the mouth to adjust. After a few months, a minor surgery is conducted to expose the implant that was previously set so that we can attach the abutment and crown to the implant, thus completing the restoration process.

Endosteal/Endosseous

These implants are used for healthy jaws that can be used instead of a bridge or denture. In most cases, endosteal/endosseous implants are used in a two-stage process.

Single-Stage

While a single-stage dental implant procedure still requires two visits, only one surgical operation is required. Longer implants are inserted into, on, or just above the jaw, so the top of the implant is exposed. A healing process is still required after the implant has been placed. Once the surrounding area has healed, the abutment and crown can be placed without the need of having to expose the implant again through the gums.

Subperiosteal

These implants are the preferred choice for a patient that has a weaker jaw. Instead of inserting the implant directly into jaw bone, the implant is placed on top of the jaw bone or is situated just above it, giving the jaw underneath some relief. Because the top of the implant is exposed through the gums, these are the types of implants that are generally used in a single-stage process.
