What to Expect During a Dental Exam

Dental exams are a critical part of preventive health care. Regular exams are beneficial as they help find tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems early on – when they’re easier to treat – and before they spread. Routine dental exams (and cleanings) play a crucial role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Having a healthy mouth helps to protect the rest of your body from serious medical disorders as oral infection can spread to other parts of your body, including your vital organs. Dental check-ups can point to issues such as oral cancer,  gum disease, and other medical conditions.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

Dental Cleaning

During a dental cleaning, the dentist will get rid of any plaque or tartar that has formed on your teeth and under the gums. Your teeth will then be brushed and/or flossed and polished. A fluoride gel may be applied to help prevent tooth decay, and you will be given tips on how to properly care for your teeth.

X-Rays

X-ray machines are used to detect dental abnormalities that are not visible to the naked eye. There are different types of dental x-rays including full-mouth x-rays (to check your overall health) and bitewing x-rays (used to check for cavities and other issues). Full mouth x-rays are taken before ‘spot checking’ specific problem areas. Generally, x-rays are not required at every dental exam.

Dentist Checkup

The dentist will then conduct a dental exam by review the x-rays to check for cavities or other dental issues. They will also visually inspect your teeth to see if they are healthy or if there are any signs of dental defects. The dentist will also evaluate your risk for future dental abnormalities. Oral cancer is also screened for during the dentist check-up. This includes feeling under your jaw, checking the insides of your lips, the sides of your tongue, and on the roof and floor of your mouth.
